Shopify Website Development Chennai: Stores Built for Indian Buyers

Opening a Shopify store takes an afternoon. Building one that accepts UPI and cards, ships reliably, issues the right invoices and shows up when people search takes planning. That planning is most of the work, and it is where Indian stores differ from the templates most Shopify guides assume.

Claritus builds Shopify stores for Chennai businesses that want to sell online without running their own hosting or server updates. E-commerce projects start from ₹50,000 and take 4–6 weeks, quoted after a discovery conversation. The store, the domain and every account stay in your name.

Shopify is one of the platforms we build online stores on. If you are still deciding how to sell online, our e-commerce website development company in Chennai page explains how we plan and build stores on Shopify and WooCommerce.

01 · Platform fit

Is Shopify the right platform for your store?

Quick answer

Shopify suits sellers who want a hosted store they can run themselves: no server to maintain, no plugin updates to chase and a faster path to launch. The trade-offs are a monthly subscription, transaction fees when you use a third-party payment gateway, and less control over the underlying code than a self-hosted store.

It tends to fit when
  • your team will add products, change prices and process orders every day without a developer
  • you want to launch quickly rather than build a custom system
  • your catalogue is ordinary products, variants and collections, not unusual ordering logic

It fits less well when you need hosting-level control, deep customisation of how the store behaves, or a store that has to live inside an existing WordPress site. The alternatives are covered further down this page.

02 · Cost in India

What does Shopify cost for a store selling in India?

Quick answer

The running cost of a Shopify store in India has three parts: the Shopify plan, a transaction fee Shopify charges on orders paid through a third-party gateway, and the gateway's own charges. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so a store based here pays that second fee on every order paid online.

Shopify's India pricing page lists these plans at monthly billing:

PlanMonthly priceShopify fee on third-party gateway orders
Basic₹1,9942%
Grow₹7,4471%
Advanced₹30,1640.6%

Choosing a plan is arithmetic, not guesswork

Moving from Basic to Grow adds ₹5,453 a month and cuts Shopify's fee by one percentage point, so the upgrade pays for itself once online sales through the gateway pass roughly ₹5.45 lakh a month. Below that level, Basic costs less. Shopify changes its prices, so we check the current figures with you before recommending a plan.

Our fee is separate

E-commerce website projects start from ₹50,000 and are quoted per project once we know your catalogue, integrations and design needs.

03 · Scope

What we set up on a Shopify store

Every store is scoped around the questions Indian sellers and buyers actually run into. Before design starts, we settle six things.

Payments

Which payment gateway to connect so customers can pay by UPI and cards, and what it costs you in fees on top of Shopify's.

Shipping

Which courier integration fits your order volumes and delivery areas, and whether you offer cash on delivery.

Invoicing and tax

How GST invoices are generated for your orders.

Structure

Collections, navigation and product pages planned around how customers search, not around how your stock is stored.

Design

A mobile-first storefront, with app and theme choices kept lean because every extra app adds weight to a page.

Tracking

Analytics set up so you can see which products and traffic sources produce orders.

After launch you manage products and orders yourself. The accounts are in your name from day one.

04 · Process

How a Shopify project runs

Most e-commerce projects take 4–6 weeks. The date depends on you returning product content, photos and approvals on schedule. If those arrive late, the launch date moves with them.

  • Discovery. We go through your catalogue, payments, shipping, tax and goals.
  • Structure and design. You approve the page structure and store design before anything is built.
  • Build and test. We set up the store, connect the gateway and shipping, and test checkout end to end.
  • Launch. The store goes live with analytics in place.

05 · After launch

Getting your store found

A launched store does not bring its own traffic. The decisions that matter most for search are made during the build: how collections are structured, whether each product has its own description instead of the supplier's text, and how quickly pages load on a phone. After launch, the ongoing work is category and product content, visibility in Chennai and across India, and measuring what produces orders.

We keep that on its own page: e-commerce SEO for Chennai businesses sets out how we approach it.

Alternatives

If Shopify isn't the right fit

Not every store belongs on Shopify. If you want full control of hosting and code, lower running costs as you grow, or you already run a WordPress site your store should sit inside, WooCommerce is often the better route, and it is the platform behind our WaxRind store.

We set out the trade-offs in WooCommerce vs Shopify for Indian businesses, and the WordPress vs Shopify comparison covers the case where your content site and your store need to work together. If you already have a store that is not performing, that is redesign work: see e-commerce website redesign for Chennai businesses.

06 · Questions

Shopify development in Chennai: common questions

How much does a Shopify website cost in Chennai?

E-commerce website projects with Claritus start from ₹50,000 and are quoted per project. Shopify's plan fee and your payment gateway's charges are billed separately by those providers.

How long does it take to build a Shopify store?

Most e-commerce projects take 4–6 weeks, provided product content and approvals arrive on schedule.

Can I manage the store myself after launch?

Yes. Shopify is built for owners to run day to day: adding products, changing prices and processing orders. Your website, domain and accounts are always in your name.

Do I need a separate payment gateway in India?

Yes. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so you connect a third-party gateway for online payments. Shopify charges a transaction fee on those orders, and the rate depends on your plan.

Should I choose Shopify or WooCommerce?

It depends on how much control you want over hosting and code. Shopify is simpler to run day to day, while WooCommerce gives you more control. If you are unsure, raise it on your first call and we will recommend one for your catalogue.

Do you work with stores outside Chennai?

Yes. We are based in Chennai and Ambur and work with clients elsewhere in India and abroad.
